My dog has had two mast cell tumors. Will his life be short?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 65 lbs

Hello, a month a go had a mct removed from his head, it was a low grade 2 with a mitotoc index of 1 so I presume that's a pretty good outcome as far as mct go? It was his second low grade in 2 years, however it was confirmed as unrelated and neither hat mestasised so I'm just wondering of we should be overly worried about his life span? Thank you

Since both the tumors were low grade and have not yet metastasized there is no indication to worry about an abbreviated life span at this time. Since your dog is so young and has already had 2 MCTs he will likely have more pop up in the future. It's important to have any little lump or bump you find on him to be checked out by your vet. The sooner they are removed, the less likely they are to spread.
