Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Balinese | Male | 12 lbs

Cam you tell me the survival rate of a cat with hemolydic anemia? He just came home from the vet with chemo drugs and steroids but still is panting hard...barley eats, but sometimes does. Is it possible to be cured?

I'm sorry to hear about Zeus's illness! In general, cats with primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia have about a 70-75% survival rate with treatment - so yes, it's very possible for cats to survive this problem and do well. I'm concerned, though, that you say he is at home but panting hard and not eating much. If his anemia is severe enough to cause breathing difficulties and loss of appetite, he may need a blood transfusion to help stabilize him until the medication has a chance to start working. I would suggest calling your veterinarian to see if he/she thinks that Zeus needs to come back in today for further treatment.
