My old dog is anxious. Can she take meds for her last vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 30 lbs

Another question about Cici. Since she is so old and her eyesight, hearing, and smell is all fading, plus she can hardly work especially for long periods of time, uncontrollable bowel movements, tumor in her stomach area we believed has ruptured after a recent fall, and cyst outside of skin, etc. my mother in law is gonna have her put to sleep at the vets office within a week. We were trying to find out if there is any type of anxiety medication cici can take due to her being scared of riding.

Poor girl. Yes anxiety medication can be given and prescribed by your vet. There are no options for this over the counter. I would try Trazodone, which is an anti-anxiety medication that works quickly to calm pets for stressful events like this. Ask your vet if she can be given this, especially if they have seen her recently, prior to her being seen for humane euthanasia. I send all my best and I am sorry that your pet is reaching end of life terms, but it sounds like you are making the best decision for her considering her poor quality of life. Best wishes and take care.

I'm so sorry to hear about the difficult decisions you have had to make for Cici. There are no over-the-counter sedatives, but there are several options that could be prescribed by your vet for Cici to take on her way to the clinic.

This should be discussed with your veterinarian. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications or dosing information without a physical exam. You can also request a housecall. Some veterinarians may do this. I'm sorry Cici is so sick. You and your family have made a brave and caring choice to ease her suffering.
