Why is my dog's tick bite swollen, purple, and infected weeks later?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old

My dog got bitten by a tick and after a couple of weeks the place of the bite looks like it has gotten infected. It swelled up a little bit over the last couple of days, but it just turned purple overnight and swelled up even more. The dog is happy and doesn't seem to be in pain at all, he's eating well and his urine and poop seems normal too. What could this be and does it require emergency care?

Hi there. It's probably a reaction to the tick bite and may need antibiotics. You can apply triple antibiotic cream to it in the mean time-just don't allow your dog to lick or eat any of it. Probably not an emergency if your pup is otherwise fine! Hope this helps.
