Is it normal for a dog not to lie down after spay with an e-collar?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 6 months and 21 days old | 12 lbs

Pepper was spayed yesterday. She is still not herself and doesn't want to lay down. She will stand in one spot or sit. She is going to the bathroom and eating and drinking/taking pain meds. I can tell that she hates the plastic e-collar but if I don't put it on her, she attempts to go after sutures. Is it common for a dog to not want to lay down with e collar on or could it be that she is too sore to lay down?

It could very well be a combination of both. However most dogs get over the e-collar after the first 1-2 days. If you are concerned about her pain level then I would ask her vet if they can prescribe additional pain medication for her. Also depending on what pain medicaitons she is on it may be making her drowsy. Take care and I hope Pepper is able to make a fully recovery from her surgery soon.
