My dog coughs, gags, and snorts every morning. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

In the morning, my dog would start to snort, gag, choke, like a cough or a reverse sneeze. Sometimes there's a trigger like excitement while sometimes it just happens while he is resting. But once I let him go for a quick walk outside, it has decreased alot. On the evening, he started to cough but after a walk at the park, its barely noticeable. He coughed 1-2 time(s) after that till the end of the day. It happens a lot in the morning, but evening-night theres barely a sound. It has been 3 days.

This could be allergy related. You can give 1/2 tablet of adult 25mg Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. If the coughing becomes more persistent or doesn't improve I would contact your vet for an exam to ensure her heart sounds okay. I hope this helps!
