Why are my senior dog's back legs weak and slipping on floors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 95 lbs

My black lab just turned 11 this year and he is now afraid of our laminate flooring and will not come in from being outside. When he is inside he acts like his back legs are struggling to catch up with his front legs it seems, like his back legs are slipping. What can be the cause of this?

Your dog could have arthritis which makes him unstable. He could also suffer from hip dysplasia (which can lead to arthritis) or have some compression of the spinal cord which can affect the hind leg movement. A vet exam is recommended to check for these issues. Some may improve with anti-inflammatory medication available from your vet. In the meantime, using small throw rugs on the floor (that have grip on the back so they don't move) may help your pup get around on the floor.
