Is my dog's epilepsy medication causing his pancreatitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 108 lbs

My 4 year old lab who has epilepsy and is on many meds and also now has pancreatitis, what do you do if it was caused by the antiepiletics? He is overweight so I know his diet will have to be controlled. He is at the vet day 3 now.

HI, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear about Boomer. Pancreatitis can be nasty and other times only cause mild symptoms. Many things can cause pancreatitis: eating a very fatty food, viruses, intestinal disease and many medications. The anti-seizure medication that can cause pancreatitis more than the others is potassium bromide. I think I would have to evaluate his case and rule out other causes for pancreatitis before I quickly blame the medication (unless he is on potassium bromide). If no other cause fits then I would change Boomer's seizure medications. But like stated above any medication COULD cause pancreatitis. So we would have to be careful regardless. I wish Boomer a speedy recovery!
