Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 7 days old | 22 lbs
My puppy Dakota peed while sleeping on my lap a few months ago, then once on my boyfriends lap about a month ago, once a few days ago on our old bed we put in the living room for a day, and then again again last night shortly after we went to bed in our bed. Dakota is a very active dog but also very lazy and loves her sleep. We were sure at first she was just so lazy she just "let it out" and laughed about it. No we are a little concerned this could be a medical problem.. any suggestions?

Hi, puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would watch her for urinating more frequently and in small amounts. At 7 months, she should be mostly house trained so this is not likely a behavior issue but it is still possible. I would take her to the vet for an exam if it happens a third time. They can put her on some antibiotics for this and she should be fine. Good luck!

There are a few possibilities. The first is that her bladder was too full before falling asleep. You may need to take her out more frequently, and especially before nap or bedtime. The second is that she has a congenital malformation in where her ureters attach to the bladder (called ectopic ureter) making leakage more probable. Less likely would be UTI, urinary bladder stones other sources of bladder inflammation, or even kidney disease. I would start by taking her outside more frequently and watching to make sure she urinates before coming back inside. If you do this and the problem still occurs, a vet checkup would be a good idea.

That’s not normal for a dog or puppy to urinate in it’s sleep. I recommend to have Dixie examined by her veterinarian and to be checked for a bladder infection. Best to check for a medical cause. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

This is happening either due to a urinary infection or due to a birth deformity in her urinary tract (ectopic ureter). you will need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked, the vet will do a urine analysis and will probably prescribe antibiotics, hopefully this will solve the problem.
