My dog ate some Neosporin. Will he be okay if he seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My dog found a 0.5 ounce plastic bottle of neosporin last night, chewed it up and consumed some (maybe 10-20%). This was around 11pm but he's been fine since. Pooed and peed fine this morning too. Is there anything to be concerned about? Thanks!

He will likely be just fine after ingesting this. Just monitor him for the next 24 hrs for any stomach upset symptoms (vomiting and/or diarrhea). A bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice can be tried to settle his stomach. If his stomach upset is more severe than a vet visit can help him get back to normal status. Best wishes with Teddy and I hope everything works out well for him. Take care.

Neosporin tends to be pretty well tolerated (I often advise using it for minor wounds, knowing it often gets licked off) so I would not be too concerned. Monitor for signs of GI upset, as with any medication, but this is not an emergency and I wouldn't intervene with inducing vomiting or anything at this point. Hope that helps!

That was naughty of Rio! Neosporin is mildly to severely toxic to dogs if ingested in large amounts. Given Rio's size, you may see some GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Should that occurs, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If you see signs such as trembling and/or seizures, you will need to take him into the vet right away, but because he did not eat a lot, this most likely won't occur.
