My Labrador has ear issues & allergies despite diet change. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 35 lbs

I have a 2 year old labrador and he always suffers with his ears i clean them and red waxy type stuff comes out, his ears dont smell bad, he shakes his head alot and scratched till he gets sores, also the whites of his eyes sometimes go red, he has had bloods taken and the vets say hes allergic to a small fraction of milk, ive taken him off all foods that involve milk so he isnt getting that but his ears still flare up. Any ideas where i can go from here because talking him off milk isnt working

HI, sorry to hear you're having a problem with Coal. In my experience, usually dogs are allergic to a type of grain or meat, not milk. But if that's the case, there may be something else he is allergic to that you have not tested for yet. I would put him on a special prescription diet for dogs with allergies. Also, ask your vet about medication to use when he is having flare up. Steroids can be helpful for this, but they need to be prescribed by a vet. there is another medication called Apoquel which may be available to you that is a great help. Good luck, i hope this helps!
