Why is my female cat scratching an itchy spot near her rear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

My 2 year old dom. cat Scarlet has one small, extremely itchy lesion just below her genitals. She is constantly scratching it. I thought she was masturbating since she is at it all the time, but then I found this small scab.. I've tried applying Polysporin and Monistat (which made her run around frantically and drool). Anything I apply to the scab she licks off and continues scratching. She sounds frustrated with the constant itch, but I don't think she's in pain.

Based on your description I'm wondering if Scarlet may be having an issue with her anal gland. If you are seeing a consistent scab and she's licking & scratching as persistently as she is, I'd be a bit concerned about an infection. I recommend having her seen by a vet, as she may need a prescription of antibiotics to clear the issue. Hope this helps.
