My inactive Labrador is overweight. How much food should I cut?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a Labrador boarding for a whole month. Owner told me to get him to lose weight. He is not an active dog so should I cut down his food intake? He eats 4 1/2 cups of food. He doesn't really play a lot. I take Him out 3 hours everyday. 1 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 at night and try to include some play time at home for 15 mins. He's just turned 2 yrs. he came from India 1 yrs ago. He eats royal canin for labradors

I think the main thing you will need to do in this case to get him on the path to weight loss is caloric reduction. 4.5 cups of food is a very large amount for this pup. I would go ahead and start by reducing it by about 25% to start and see how things are looking after a week or two. Once he sheds some of that weight, he may want to be a bit more active and willing to do things he wasn't doing previously.
