My Pomeranian has a collapsed trachea. Is OTC cough medicine safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 7 years and 2 months old | 5 lbs

We thought our Pomeranian had kennel cough but since it's been three months with medication no change we took her in for x-rays and found out she had a slight collapse trachea so far no meds have eased her cough. My friend told me that we could use over-the-counter cough medicine for her. Is this true? If yes how much? she is 5 lbs Desperate for anything to ease this cough

Unfortunately medication won't improve this sort of cough because it is due to a functional problem not irriation. She is coughing because her trachea is collapsing. I would not recommend over the counter human medicine as sone cough bottles have ingredients toxic to dogs, and it wouldn't help anyway.
