My cat's burnt paw: How to prevent infection and make him comfortable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 7 lbs

Hi a few days ago I my cat started favouring one leg, he was keeping his weight off it and he's very adventurous so I had a good look and from where he was licking thought he had sprained it, he started appearing to walk a bit better but was still sitting with it lifted. I have inspected again to see his paw has begun pealing and he has in fact burnt it somehow and I am wondering the best way to keep it from infection and to make him more comfortable

Hi, This is Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mr. Wallace (great name!)! If that is the only paw that is affected then I suspect trauma or a burn. It already appears as though it is healing. I would just keep him indoors and on soft surfaces. Try to keep licking to a minimum. I have seen similar wounds from dogs who run on hot asphalt in the summer and burn their paw pads. If more than one paw is effected it could still be a burn/trauma but I'd worry about an immune condition, especially if it gets better but then keeps reoccurring. If the paw doesn't look better in a few days or he isn't feeling well (not eating, lethargic) then have him looked at by your Veterinarian. I wish you the best!
