Why is my senior dog suddenly hiding, sad, and acting afraid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

My miniature wiener dog is 11 years old. She is very active, playful and aggressive, but just recently she has become mellow and seems to be afraid of something. She hides behind our couches or under the desk and always looks at us as if she has done something wrong and we are scolding her. We tried playing with her and taking her for walks, but she still looks... sad. I'm really worried. All she wants to do is sleep on the couch with us. She eats and drinks normal. Is she depressed? Or bored??

ChaCha is adorable and I'm sorry to hear that she has been so out of sorts. Hiding, behavioral changes, and a reluctance to play may indicate signs of pain, heart disease, liver disease, among others. I recommend taking ChaCha to her vet for an exam and any necessary diagnostic tests (possibly blood work and x-rays) to get to the bottom of this issue. She may need a course of pain medication if she managed to cause a back or neck injury. I hope that she's feeling better soon!
