My Shih Tzu is constipated, stool stuck, and she's losing energy. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 14 days old | 1lb

My Shih tzu is constipated horribly. She has been trying to poop for hours and there is a piece that is stuck halfway in and half way out but will not budge. What do I do? She has lost all of her energy!

I would recommend taking Bella to veterinarian. They may be able to remove the feces or she may need an enema to help pass the stool. Intestinal parasites can occasionally cause constipation or if she is on a milk replacer this is sometimes the culprit, and the veterinarian may recommend a fecal analysis or other tests. If you have already tried to gently remove the stool and are unable I don't think there is much else you can safely do at home.

You can try to add canned pumpkin or canned beans to the diet to help with constipation and make the stool softer, you can also try 1/4 tea spoon of miralax twice a week to help with this. Since he is not neutered I would be concerned his prostate may be enlarged causing him to feel bad and putting pressure on the colon making things difficult. I would recommend seeing your vet to see if this a problem or an enema may be needed to help
