Why is my dog struggling to walk and yelping after hurting his leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered

My dog hurt his leg yesterday when running, he just stopped and yelped then struggled to walk. He is walking around but not running and finding it hard to walk up the stairs. It's his back leg. He is struggling to lie down and walking very slow. Left leg I think.

Hi, i suspect Barney may have injured one of the ligaments in his knee. In order to make a definitive diagnosis, you will need to have him examined by a veterinarian. If he did injure his knee and we suspect a ligament tear, your veterinarian will discuss the best treatment options including pain medication, crate rest and possibly surgery if indicated.

Barney may have sprained a ligament or strained a muscle which should get better if your test him. However it could be something more serious such as cruciate disease or patella location, have a good feel all over. If you don't notice anythin too painful or swollen try giving him a day of rest then if there is no improvement visit the vet.

Poor Barney! The signs you are describing sound like he is in a lot of pain. He may have injured his back, limbs or neck when he jumped off the couch. I recommend taking Barney to your veterinarian so they can decide where the pain is coming from. There are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to see a veterinarian to help Barney with his pain. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Barney can get relief from pain soon!
