Why is my cat pooping in his water bowl instead of the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

my 11 mo. old cat just started pooping in his water dish the last 2 days when I'm not around which is near his food dish. He does uses the litter box for urinating. He does have a brother the same age and they get along fine. There has not been anything different in the home. What could be causing this behavior?

Inappropriate defecation can be related to a medical problem, especially if Jake has had diarrhea or blood in his stool or seems painful. This can also be a behavioral problem. I would make sure you have at least 3 litter boxes if you have two cats. Look into Cat Attract litter, and be sure to scoop the boxes 1-2 times a day since some cats won't go in a dirty box. You could also try a pheromone diffuser like Feliway near the boxes if possible. If you're still having problems see your veterinarian to rule out a medical issue. Good luck!
