My 5-month-old puppy is limping with a swollen toe. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 6 days old | 85 lbs

I have St Bernard puppies. They are 5 months old. The one started limping yesterday. I inspectes her paw and the third toe is swollen and she is lame on that foot. It iis not warm. When I move it up and down I can see she has discomfort, bit she allows me to do passive movements with it. After she rested it is quite lame, but after a while she plays and all seems well. Should I take her to the clinic, or just strap it up?

Pipi could have a soft tissue injury, a dislocated bone or even a broken bone. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and maybe an X-ray to diagnose her. She may need rest, dog anti inflammatory medication or even a splint. I would not splint it yourself as that could accidentally affect her growth plates and cause long term issues. Do not give any human medication as it can be toxic to dogs.
