My senior dog with DM won't eat. How do I get her to eat more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 32 lbs

My 10 yr old GSD mix female has degenerative mylopathy which is progressing. She is otherwise healthy except for her appetite. She only weighed 40 lbs at her heaviest, but is down to 31 pounds now. She takes a few bite of dog food or meat that I've prepared, and turns her head away, refusing any more food. Please give me ideas on how to stimulate her appetite. She only has a few months at most,, before the DM makes it necessary to let her go. Seeing her so thin makes me worry. Thank you.

I am sorry Nadia is not doing well. The significant weight loss may be secondary to a disease other than the DM. I would recommend bloodwork and abdominal ultrasound to determine the cause of her weight loss. If you do not wish to pursue further diagnostics, discuss an appetite stimulant or steroids with your veterinarian.
