My dog runs to other dogs on walks. How can I control him safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 19 days old | 66 lbs

My dog during walks, always run to other dogs to play with them even sometimes they aren't friendly. I'm afraid that a day a dog can bite him or that a car hit him when he tries to cross to street to go to another dog, also because of his weight i can't hold him near me. How can I fix this problem?

I would recommend consulting with a trainer to use your commands so he follows your guidance so you're not relying on your strength to hold him. You could also work on using a gentle leader or a no pull harness/gentle walker which requires less strength to hold your dog. Your concerns are very valid and I would be concerned as well about him getting hit by car or injured by another dog this behavior continues.
