Is it safe to add warm water to my dog's kibble to soften it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 6 days old | 9.48 lbs

My Boovs has just changed food simply because he doesn't like his old anymore. His current has bigger kibbles than his usual. Therefore, I soaked them with water to make them softer and easier for him to chew. And he seems to really like it and looks forward to every meal. Please note that I put boiling water on his food and mix it with room temp water so it's not that hot for him to drink. Are there any implications if I continue to add hot/warm water in his food?

No, it's a good way to increase fluid intake. Try not to change foods too often It can lead to gastrointestinal upset and may make him even more finicky. Stick with one diet. If he gets "bored", keep feeding it. He will eat when he gets hungry. Be firm. Consider a more strict feeding schedule since some dogs thrive on routine.

Yes, either way is fine! It is not necessary to add water to his food as long as he always has fresh water available, but some people like to soak kibble in water to encourage more fluid intake. Again, it's not necessary (there is nothing specifically therapeutic about it unless he has a medical condition where you'd need to push fluids) - but it also is not harmful. Hope this helps!
