Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 6 days old | 12 lbs

Hi my Hans just now is breathing fast. It is really hot weather these days but I just want to inform myself well on how to keep him cool for the summer. I bought a blanket that stay cool for 8 hrs but he dosent use it and I have 3 water fountains around the house for him. What else can I do for him? And is the fast breathing normal?

Fast breathing can be a normal way for you pet to cool himself. If the house is tolerable for you then it is likely tolerable for your pet. However, labored breathing and open mouth breathing in a cat usually indicate a more serious problem concerning the lungs and a vet visit right away is highly recommended. However, good ways to keep a pet cool is to set up fans in the home (if A/C is not in place), therefore when the pet gets hot he can just sit in front of the fan to cool off. Floor fans can be purchased from your local hardware store or department store. Keeping water available at all times is also helpful. Most cats don't like blankets when it is above normal temperature, so this is not uncommon. Best wishes taking care of your pet Hans and I hope everything turns out ok for him. Take care.

Hi, this is Dr Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm assuming Hans is otherwise acting fine and is eating, drinking, using the litter box normally and active. Younger animals do tend to have a fast breathing pattern but if this is suddenly abnormal for him then there is need for concern. Anytime there is any question about breathing issues it is recommended that you see a Veterinarian right away. Good luck! I hope Hans improves!
