My cat has a black spot on its tooth. Is it tartar or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

I was recently made aware I should be cleaning my cats' teeth regurarly and so I checked their teeth now to see if hopefully the damage wasn't bad enough to take to a veterinary. I found this black spot on one of my cats' teeth.. Is it okay or do I need to worry about it?

This looks like quite a bit of tartar and calculus buildup. You will likely be more successful at preventing significant dental disease by having a professional dental cleaning done. Once all the calculus and tartar built up are removed it'll be easier to maintain a clean mouth.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks like significant tartar build-up, which can eventually lead to gingivitis, pain, infection and even death of the teeth. I recommend making an appointment for Juniper to see your veterinarian to discuss a dental cleaning, where the tartar can be removed from her teeth safely. I hope this is helpful!
