My dog on anxiety meds: Is extreme sleepiness and not eating normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old

my dog has anxiety so he has recently been put on medication and this is why I am here today. I know that this medication should make him calmer but he seems to be acting strangely. he sits around and sleeps all day, I got back from a 7 hour shift and he hadn't touched his food or needed to go to the bathroom and he in MUCH less excited on any occasion. Is this a case of depression or just effects of the meds.

No worries. Just about all anti-anxiety medicaitons used in pets have a sedative effect in the first 2 weeks of use until steady levels are achieved in the bloodstream. As long as he is eating his food by end of day then I would not be too concerned. Also check his gums and make sure they are a nice pink color, which indicates his blood pressure is good. If you still have concerns then contact your vet and see if the dosage can be dropped a bit to reduce the sedative effects. Best wishes with Hershey moving forward. I hope everything gets better from here moving forward. Take care.
