Why won't my cat eat food but only treats and is losing weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has stopped eating his regular food, wet and dry. He cries for treats(temptations) and only eats them. He keeps trying to get outside, I guess to eat grass which I usually provide but not at the moment. He has lost two pounds. I took him to the vet yesterday, they did blood work, CBC, which was fine and gave him a shot of antibiotic. I see no change and am thinking diabetes or thyroid. What do you think?

Finn may need further diagnostics to find out his problem. Diabetes is usually able to be diagnosed from baseline bloodwork and thyroid disease in cats usually makes them ravenous not anorexic. Primary GI disease, heart disease can cause vomiting and not eating. Or make sure he had a good oral exam (may require sedation) to check for dental or oral disease.
