Why is my older cat collapsing or staring blankly sometimes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

My neutered, 9 YOA cat, slightly overweight, has been having episodes occasionally. The last one occurred when he ran down a flight of stairs. When he got to the bottom he stopped, flopped over on his side and just pulled up into a fetal position for less then a min. He then sat up and behaved like nothing was wrong. this has happened 3 - 4 times in the last few months. Urination and eating are normal. The other times, he just stopped and stared for about 15 - 30 seconds. Any ideas?

Hi there. Sorry about Tom-these episodes you are describing make me worried he may have either seizure episodes or heart problems-causing him to pass out from time to time. If it has happened multiple times, it is definitely time to take him in to your vet for an exam. They will likely recommend bloodwork and x rays to check him out and make sure nothing else is going on so that they can come up with a treatment plan. I hope this helps!
