My diabetic dog is vomiting and very weak. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

My dog currently has Diabetes and Cushings Disease. She has been sick to her stomach the last 2 days not able to keep a few sips of water at a time down. She has missed 3 doses of novolin at 19 units x 2 daily. She has no energy, she yelps when I pick her up, and does nothing but sleep. She urineated just now for the 1st time in 2 days and has not had a BM since Friday afternoon. Your thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated

Poor Isabelle! I'm sorry that she's so sick. Unfortunately, this is very concerning - when diabetic pets are vomiting and not eating, they are very prone to develop something called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA. This happens because their bodies are not able to handle short periods of minor illness - they begin to break down fat for energy because they can't make use of the glucose in their bloodstream, which quickly leads to serious problems. Because of this, vomiting and not eating for more than 24 hours in any diabetic pet should be considered a life-threatening emergency. I'm afraid this is not something that can be managed at home - she needs to be seen by an emergency vet immediately. In most cases, pets in DKA will need to be hospitalized for IV fluids and supportive care until they are eating again with no vomiting, and their glucose levels are property regulated.
