My senior dog struggles to breathe with kidney disease. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My dog is at least 12 years old and is struggling to breath at times. He may have a heart problem or a respiratory problem. He has recently been diagnosed with kidney disease stage three, ( just beginning stage three.). He is a small terrier type crossbreed.. what is the best thing for me to do now for him.. He also seems to be off his food at present and has been prescribed vetinery kidney prescription diet I/d.

Hello. Struggling to breath is very uncomfortable and needs to be addressed immediately as it indicates very serious disease which could be fatal at any time. Jockey's breed suggests that heart disease is most likely, however with renal disease as well he could have vomited and aspirated. You will need to have a vet listen to his heart as well as look at chest x-rays to determine if the cause of the breathing is his heart or his lungs. He will then need medications for this. It will be hard to treat heart disease on top of his kidney disease, however struggling to breath is a terrible way to be, and requires treatment to provide a humane quality of life. I am sorry that Jockey is so sick. I suggest a re-visit with your vet. Good luck with Jockey.
