Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My elderly friend has a little Chihuahua he is 10 yrs old he has a bad heart and lungs he has to take 4 medications twice a day forthe rest of his life. My question is what can she do about his flea problem they are driving the poor dog nuts. He has a tape worm also taking medication for it also. I feel sorry for little Taco. The flees are so bad and yes she has 5 other dogs. He sleeps with her so she is scared to put any spot on treatment and also his medical condition. Please help!

Most flea medication can still be given if a pet has heart problems. Poor guy. I would recommend Simparica oral or Comfortis oral, if she doesn't like the topicals. However she will have to treat all the pets if she has any chance of breaking the flea life cycle. If too many fleas are concentrated in one area then they can overpower any flea product. Treating the Home with a flea fogger from Lowe's or Home Depot is also recommended, along with washing his and her bedding in hot water. A Capstar can be given to rid all fleas within 24 hrs before the flea preventative is given, if the fleas are as bad as you say. I hope she is able to get things under control very soon. Best wishes and take care.
