Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 55 lbs
My 3 yr old female shepherd woke up this morning, stretched and sprayed me with very, very foul urine this morning. I don't think she was aware it happened. She is displaying slightly elevated levels of genital licking, but otherwise no abnormal symptoms. I think she may have a bladder infection? I have a vet appointment in 48 hours, what should I be looking out for in the mean time that would tell me this is an emergency? Also, any tips on how to get a urine sample?

If Dutch has blood in her urine, seems painful, or is straining to urinate without producing urine I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian before your appointment. To catch a urine sample you can take a clean, shallow plastic container and scoop it underneath her once she postures to urinate. It can help to have two people - one to hold a leash and the other to catch the sample. Place it in the refrigerator until you go to your appointment.
