Dog rubbing eyes after tacking surgery: Is it irritation or failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chinese Shar-Pei | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 26 days old | 30 lbs

My dog got her eyes tacked about 2 months ago now, stitches out and she seemed fine, no eye problems etc. Recently she's started pawing at them again, and is rubbing her eyes against the bed, sofa, anything really. Could this just be irritation because she's had her stitches out, or will she need them tacking again? Her breed is notorious for eye problems so I'm worried the procedure hasn't worked.

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Pebbles. It is not unusual for Shar Peis to need a tacking procedure more than once. Given her behavior, I would recommend you have her rechecked by your veterinarian. They can determine if her eyelids need to be tacked again or if a more definitive surgery needs to be performed. It is great that you're paying such good attention as this condition can cause damage to the eyes if left untreated.
