My dog's tail cyst is red, hot, and inflamed. Can I use antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 70 lbs

My German Shepard had a cyst for about two years now on the under side of his tail. It was white for that period of time this morning. It is red and inflamed all around it. I have been cleaning it and trimmed the hair around it so I can keep an eye on it. It is also hot to the touch now. I have amoxicillin (I run a dog kennel). Should I just keep it clean and start a round of antibiotics?

No, I would not give Jacks amoxicillin. It is never recommended to self treat your animals, as you can accidentally do great harm to them. Cysts are not pockets of infections, and antibiotics are not used to treat them. It could be that the cyst somehow opened up and drained, and infection entered the area leading it to be red and hot to the touch, but without seeing it in person, I can't say this for certain. I would have Jacks seen by a vet for this cyst. The vet can drain it sterilely, may removed it surgically if there is a concern it could reoccur, and can give any other treatment needed. I would take him into the vet today or first thing Monday.
