My cat is aggressive and anxious around guests. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 years old

I've had a cat for around 9 years that is perfectly fine around me, but is extremely anxious and aggressive (hissing, scratching, running away) with anyone that comes into my apartment. It's been getting progressively worse over the years, from bareable to a point that I don't want to invite anyone over. I've tried all of the anti-anxiety remedies I've seen online, including the diffusers, etc. But nothing seems to work. He's had medical checkups in the past but all fine. Not sure what to do.

This is a very tough problem for you to have! I would have Toby seen by a vet, as there are prescription medications that can help a cat with anxiety. It sounds like you have tried all you can at home, and now it's time to look into using prescription drugs to see if that helps him. These medications could include prozac and zoloft. It would be up to your vet to determine if medication is appropriate for Toby, and what medication would be safest to use. I would make an appointment to have him seen on Monday. I hope this helps!

Poor Tomas! It sounds like he gets very anxious and stressed about being taken to new places, which is a fairly common problem in cats - this can certainly cause aggressive behavior similar to what you describe. He would probably be happier staying at home when you are out of town, so you may want to consider having someone stop by your house to feed him daily during your trips rather than taking him to someone else's home to stay. It's possible that prescription anti-anxiety medication may also help with his behavior, so I would definitely suggest talking to your veterinarian about this when you get a chance. Feliway pheromone diffusers or a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure may also be helpful for him.
