How long should my puppy take ringworm medication before re-test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 17 days old | 8 lbs

Adopted puppy on 6/24 from shelter. Ringworm diagnosis & treatment started by vet staff 6/19. Rec'd 27 ml bottle of Terbinafine & dosed .2 ml daily until ran out around 7/3. Cannot reach shelter vet for question: Does puppy need more Terbinafine until his re-test at neuter appt. on 7/20? He doesn't scratch/itch like he did previously. Cannot tell if rings on skin due to fur. If best to continue dosing, can I buy from Banfield? Cost? Shelter was to provide all meds free. Thx.

Hi there! For ringworm we often treat for 30 days, depending on the veterinarian's choice and how bad the infection is. You will probably not be able to get a prescription without seeing a new doctor unless you can get you're other doctor to fax a previous prescription. If they did not prescribe you anymore, your doctor may want to see if your puppy improves with little treatment. You will have to get ahold of the original prescription before you can do anything else unless you want to see another dr (probably ER on the weekends) to see if the doctor thinks you need more.

Yes he does need it for longer. typically this treatment should be given for 3 weeks, he was only treated for a little over a week, you should try and get him to the vet or shelter in order to get more of this treatment.
