My dog fell and is licking her foot. Is it pain or hip dysplasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | 5 years old

Hi I just had a quick question. My dog fell of the couch, but my couch isn't very high. This has happened to her before like 2 years ago and she started limping so I took her to the vet and they gave her pain killers. About 2 days later she was normal again walking around. This time she didn't start leaping or anything but I caught her licking her foot. Also I think my dog has Hip Dysplasia, it's a genetic trait because her father has it as well just not as severe as Bella's.

Bella is such a cutie! Make sure to check all her toenails to ensure none of them are broken or bleeding. If they all look okay and she isn't limping then she is likely okay. If she continues to lick or starts limping then I would have your vet do an exam. Sometimes they will lick if they are in pain. Hip dysplasia is an unfortunate genetic disorder. As long as she isn't having any difficulty getting up/down or doesn't seem painful then you could start her on some joint supplements like dasuquin or cosequin. If she seems painful, talk to your vet about a pain medicine regimen to add in as well as joint supplements. I hope this helps!
