My unspayed dog has a breast lump. Is it cancer and life-threatening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 115 lbs

Hello, I have a Rottweiler named Bella. She is 6yrs old. She has not been fixed. She has a knot in her breast about this size of a balled up piece of notebook paper but more egg shaped and the knot is lumpy. She doesn't act like it hurts when I touched it but I don't mess with it at all now. I'm just wondering if it could be cancer or a tumor??? Is this life threatening to her?? Thank you very much..........

Hi there! Unfortunately, yes - from your description, I would be very concerned that she may have a mammary tumor. This is a very common problem in middle-aged and older intact females. If it is a mammary tumor, there is about a 50% chance of it being malignant (cancerous), so I would definitely recommend having this checked by a veterinarian as soon as you can. He/she can discuss options for biopsy or surgical removal of the mass.
