My chihuahua nips my older dog. How do I train him to use pee pads?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 6 lbs

1 yr old rescued chi. Two issues. One he's nipping my older chi legs and she has back/legs problems. He's hurting her. Second, for most part he's housebroken to go outside. I want to retrain him to use pee pads inside, due to my age/health and winter weather. Bella uses them. Will he use same ones as her or does he need separate place. I'm afraid he's mentally challenged. I've had him about 4-5 months.

Hi there. It sounds like Oliver is having a hard time adjusting to all the changes in his life recently. He may be trying to play with Bella-or he may be trying to test him limitations and "pack order" with her. He will probably urinate where your other females urinates to mark his territory if he feels he is the dominant in the household-otherwise he will seek his own new "toilet" areas. If he is actively hurting Bella he may not be safe to keep in the home with her (through no real fault of his own, we have no idea what he has been exposed to) but you have to take care of Bella first and he is still quite young. If you can-try taking them to a neutral territory like a park close by. I hope this helps you!
