My budgie seems depressed, squeaky, and won't sing. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

We have a budgie that is about 1-2 years old. We've had her for about a year now. When she got used to her new home she felt happy and didn't show any signs of depression. Now she started making these very squeaky noises and looking at her mirror even more than she used to before. To me it looks like she wants a mate but we can't really afford one. How do we help her and cheer her up? Also, she no longer wants to be pet by us and she will no longer sing along with me. What do we do?

Noticed you posted twice so I'm reposting my answer her to make sure you get it. It's possible Kicolina might be wishing for a mate. If she seems down, adding in a toy that she can snuggle against such as a soft nest or preening toy, or even adding in one of the little "fake" parakeets that sing may help her feel a bit more comfortable. Interacting together and offering her some favorite treats may also help. If she continues to act depressed, or shows any signs of illness, a vet checkup is always a good idea to rule out any health issues.
