Does my cat with cerebellar hypoplasia from distemper need vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 6 lbs

My cat has cerebral hypoplasia that I was told was caused by the mother cat having distemper while she was pregnant. Does my cat need to be vaccinated against distemper?

Yes, Luna should receive her vaccinations just like a "normal" cat - her condition does not have any effect on this :) It's true that cerebellar hypoplasia can be caused by certain types of infections in the mother during pregnancy, including distemper - but this does not confer any kind of long-lasting immunity to the kittens.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kittens with Cerebral hypoplasia can be managed just like normal kittens! Meaning they should follow the same vaccine, deworming and neutering schedule! Cats with CH can be such charmers!
