Senior cat with severe illness: Is it time for tests or euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 17 years and 6 months old | 7.93 lbs

Cat 17 years with kidney disease. Now has distended abdomen/anaemia wants to be in cold places has diarrhea and ear infection . Weight increase .6 kg in 3 weeks . Vet wants to do blood test scan and possible aspiration he suspects fip. I feel he is uncomfortable and may not get better so putting to sleep may be better for him than having tests which are not nice (if he survives sedation) then coming round and dying anyway with no difference in quality of life .

You definitely have some hard decisions to make regarding what to do about Gizmo. Neither choice is wrong. You have to make the decision that you feel most comfortable with (more tests vs euthanasia). If you choose to test/treat Gizmo will likely need some form of treatment/managment of his disease long term. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. My best advice is to listen to your gut and choose the decision you feel most comfortable with.
