Hello. I have an 11 year old female goat who has recently become severely bloated. She has not drunk water or ate for the past day. She is also unable to pee but has pooped recently. She is walking fine and is almost always standing up. Her temperature is also notmal. Is there a way to reduce the bloating?

Hi there. Bloating in goats can be an emergency and will require veterinary assistance. If she is not eating or drinking, it is time to take her in. Depending on how bad it is-they may be able to pass a stomach tube or it may be surgical and require a puncture of the rumen to relieve pressure. It worries me that she is not urinating. This can happen if she is severely dehydrated but also in diseases like renal (kidney) failure (she is older) or she could have a blockage from urinary calculi. All of these situations will require veterinary hands on help. I hope that everything f goes well to you and my best to you and your friend. I hope this helps!

If the goat is bloated and unable to urinate it is an emergency situation as I suspect her bladder may be blocked. Goats are very prone to forming bladder stones. If this iscthe case her bladder will burst and it will be fatal without treatment. Another possibility is that her rumen is suffering from gaseous bloat. Both of these situations require immediate attention by a large animal vet.
