Why are my dog's paw pads red, blotchy, hot, and causing limping?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 36 lbs

our dog Vinnie has dark red blotches on his paw pads and he limps we have changed his diet to no grains, he has been on steroids he feels hot, he has had this to some extent for 3 years I don't know what else we can do Please help with some ideas Thank You

A food allergy could potentially cause itching and secondary redness on the feet, and it is possible that Vinnie is allergic to a protein source and not a grain. An environmental allergen like pollen or grass would be a little more common. If the redness is on his actual paw pad he could also have an immune mediated disease. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about additional tests - an allergy blood panel might be helpful, or a biopsy could rule out immune mediated disease.
