My puppy is scared outside before shots. When can he go to school?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 months and 20 days old | 10 lbs

Ziggy doesn't yet have all his shots so when I take him outside I carry him. However, he is dreadfully scared and trembling. Should I continue taking him out? Is this additional stress hurting him? How soon after his third set of shots can he go to puppy school? He is due in a few days.

Congrats on your puppy! I typically advise my clients that I am comfortable with a puppy going to puppy school as soon as they've had all their shots, so you can get him signed up! If he is fearful going outside, continue to take him out for short periods of time, and do what you can to make it a positive experience for him. You can give him treats when he is out with you to help him associate good things with the experience, or could even bring him out when it's meal time and hand feed his kibble. Try not to overwhelm him - if he's fearful, you could start by just sitting quietly with him in your lap, and offer treats or a meal. As soon as those are gone, go back inside where he's comfortable. Slowly extend your time outside as he shows more comfort with the experience. Hope that helps!
