My dog has high enzymes and an adrenal tumor. What are the risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 21 lbs

My Jack Russell X is showing very high Blood Enzymes. Blood tests have eliminated Cushings disease. Ulltrasound appears to show her right Adrenal Gland is "mushy" and some inflamation of her liver near this gland. The vet suggests a biopsy with keyhole to ascertain if tumour is in place and whether benign or not.. We are concerned that if surgery is taken 1) if cancerous it might be wider and/or it might spread faster, 2) that her one remaining Adrenal gland can cope, 3) the risks. Regards, Trev

Poor Poppy! If she does have a cancerous tumour in the adrenal it is much better to find out as you may be able to have it removed. The risk of the cancer spreading due to biopsy is minimal in comparison to leaving a cancerous tumour to its own devices. One adrenal gland can usually function fine, and there is always the option of substituting the hormones with medication like we do in addison's disease where the adrenals don't function properly.
