My dog gained weight. Can I safely cut her food and add veggies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 17 lbs

Can I safely reduce my dogs food from 2/3 to 1/2 cup per day? She's put on a little weight recently. I've been told she's OK at 17.5 pounds but that she shouldn't get any heavier. I'm thinking maybe I should cut back since she's 5 now and I don't want her creeping up to 18 pounds. is this ok? The food I feed her is 422- 441 calories per cup. I would also add minced steamed veggies and pumpkin for bulk and to help her feel satiated. She also gets an hour walk most days.

Yes! You can certainly do that! Good question! For her weight she would need about 390 calories per day. If you cut her food to 1/2 cup that would equal approximately 220.5 calories. Then you would have about 170 calories left over for the veggies and pumpkin. Be sure to count in any other treats/food you give her. It doesn't take much to add on a lot of extra calories to a 17# dog! The other option is to switch her to a "light" or "senior" formula dog food that has less calories per cup. Then she can eat more :) I hope this helps! Best wishes to you and Chloe. She is beautiful!
