Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed
Hi, my pet Shihtzu has been to the groomers yesterday as her hair was really long! She's had it all cut short but today we have noticed her vulva is red and swollen, could you advise what this could be?

This looks like a mass adjacent to the vulva, and it is probably not related to the recent grooming. This could be a benign mass like a lipoma or could be something more serious, and I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to have it examined. They may want to take a small sample using a needle. Another possibility would be a hernia, although this is a little less likely based on your picture, but a veterinarian would probably be able to determine whether or not a hernia is possible based on an exam.

It is hard to see from the photo but this actually looks like a mass near the vulva as opposed to a swollen vulva. I would have it checked and tested by the vet as lumps in this area can be nasty. Otherwise it may be a reaction in the skin due to clipping or shampoo but I think this is less likely.

This looks like a mild skin infection around the vulva but she may also have some vaginitis or a urinary tract infection that is causing the problem. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. I don't think it is an emergency but you should try to have her examined in the next few days.

It is difficult to see from the photo when I try to enlarge it but it looks as though there may be a tumor (mass) above the vulva. That does not look normal. I would suggest you get her to a vet for an exam. I don't think it is an emergency but I would try to get her examined in the next few days. Hope this helps.

The pictures are very pixelated and I can’t get a good view. It does however look like there is a mass protruding from her vulva. There are a variety of tumors that can develop in that area. Some are malignant where as some are benign but you cannot tell the difference by looks. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian who may aspirate the mass or sedate her and remove the mass and send it for testing. Best to have this done early. In the meantime try to protect the area from trauma. She may need to wear a doggy diaper and an Elizabethan collar if she is licking at the area. Also check it for any evidence of wounds or infection. Best of luck.
