Why did my dog yelp when I nudged him? Is he in pain or startled?

Found him laying beside dog bed in closet - after standard potty walk. I nudged his tush with my palm to move him into bed. The yelp scared the crap out of me. Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 36 lbs

It's possible you may have just startled Blu Bear by poking at him when he wasn't expecting it, however if he is appearing in pain such as limping, tail tucked, lethargic, not eating, etc, it would be best to bring him into the vet for an exam.
