My dog is dry heaving and acting strange after neuter. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old

My dog has had episodes of dry heaving lately. They usually go away after 10 or 15 minutes, but they're reoccurring. Should I worry? Also, he was neutered a couple weeks ago and has recently been walking with his tail between his legs and trying to reach hind end. Is this a sign that there are complications with his recovery?

Constantly dry heaving and trying to vomit are signs that your pup probably needs to see his doctor. Tail down and trying to reach his rear aren't complications of a neuter-they are a normal reaction to pain in the area. Please keep on his e collar (or "cone") at all times so that he cannot reach this area as it can get very swollen and painful if he is agitating it right after surgery. Hope this helps!
